Sanjib Bhattacharya

Indian Classical Performing Artist

Sanjib Bhattacharya — recipient of prestigious appreciation awards from the former Presidents of India, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam and Pratibha Patil for his invaluable contributions to Indian classical dance and culture — is a luminous torchbearer of Indian classical dance whose life has become a bridge between tradition, spirituality, and global cultural harmony. Born in India and now based in California, his art transcends performance; it is prayer in motion, carrying the fragrance of devotion, rhythm, and storytelling across continents.

A disciple of the legendary Gurus Bipin Singh, Darshana Jhaveri, and Kalavati Devi, and deeply inspired by the visionary artistry of Manjusri Chaki Sircar and Mamata Shankar, he has devoted over four decades to preserving and reimagining the sacred spirit of Manipuri and contemporary dance traditions.

From the temples of rhythm in India to stages across China, Japan, Mongolia, Thailand, Australia, Germany, Spain, Poland, Indonesia, Sweden, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Philippines, Maldives, England, Canada, and the United States, his artistry has inspired audiences through performances, collaborations, education, and healing movement practices.

Through his academy, Movements in Motion, he continues to nurture a committed generation of students in San Ramon, Fremont, and San Jose, offering rigorous training in Manipuri dance, contemporary movement, traditional drum playing, and his dynamic fitness and wellness program, Dance Sutra — inspiring young artists to grow into expressive, disciplined, and confident performers.

Over the decades, he has also served as a visiting artist, performer, choreographer, and educator at prestigious institutions including the University of California, Los Angeles; the University of California, Santa Cruz; San José State University; Duquesne University; Hunter College; the University of Pittsburgh; and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, along with many other local and international organizations.

Beyond the stage, he continues to touch countless lives through his work with specially-abled children and senior communities, sharing dance as a language of joy, compassion, healing, and human connection.
